Protecting Families from Big Government for Over 20 Years

What Triggers a DCF Investigation?

Getting a phone call or home visit from a Department of Children and Families (DCF) investigator is a traumatic experience for most parents. While the agency is responsible for protecting our state’s youth, reports of abuse and neglect can be false or a misinterpretation of the facts.

The compassionate attorneys at The Law Offices of Mark Sherman compiled this short blog to offer some comfort. Read on to learn what triggers a DCF investigation in Connecticut and what to do when contacted by an agency case worker.

How Is Neglect or Abuse Reported?

Anyone can file a report with the DCF alleging neglect or physical, sexual, or emotional abuse of a child. If a neighbor, teacher, or pastor believes a minor is in danger at home, they can call or write the agency with their account. DCF investigators evaluate the report immediately to determine what the child’s risk level is and start from there, based on the department’s prescribed timeline.

A Caregiver’s Substance Abuse or Domestic Violence

A parent or caregiver’s use of illicit drugs or alcohol can prompt an investigation by DCF since this environmental factor puts a minor in danger. Children can experience chronic stress, trauma, and other adverse experiences when their guardians misuse intoxicants. Domestic violence in a child’s home is also a concern for DCF case workers, as it can affect the safety and welfare of minors in the home, with or without accompanying substance abuse.

Inadequate Living Conditions

Parental fitness and the ability to provide your children with adequate living conditions, such as a safe, stable, and sanitary home that meets your family’s needs, is also a concern for DCF. Your residence should be free of dangers, such as exposed electrical wires, pests, and unsecured weapons. Otherwise, these environmental hazards may cause a DCF evaluation.

Trash must be in a receptacle. There should be an absence of rotting food, pet feces, and piles of dirty dishes. Children must also have access to a bedroom with a bed and clean linens, and DCF inspectors expect accommodations for gender separation with older minors.
